Tokyo Tango by Rika Yokomori Book Review

Saya is a classically beautiful Japanese girl of nineteen. She has no difficulty attracting men of all ages, and is happy to give them what they want. Sometimes they pay, sometimes not, though she doesn’t particularly like any of them, and as for love, does that really exist?

Then she meets Bogey.

He’s a middle-aged forty-something with a paunch and greying hair who fancies himself as something of a yakuza, a gangster. He makes his living through gambling, wagering on anything late into the night, mahjong, the horses, bicycle riding, and the super-hot boiling over stockmarket where everybody always wins. He adores gangster movies and hanging round with the rough crowd. Saya is bedazzled by Bogey, he’s known as that because of his love of Bogart’s movies. She’s fascinated by his weird selection of friends and is flattered by the attention of an older man, especially one such as he. Inevitably she becomes his mistress without a moment’s hesitation.

‘Whatever you do, don’t go with a gambler,’ was the one piece of advice her mother gave her when it came to men. But when did a teenage girl ever take advice about men from her mother? Saya is no different. She jumps at the opportunity, she loves cuddling into his warm body and laying her head on his fat tummy, she will do anything he wants. She even buys a cookbook and attempts to cook him the food he loves, not that he is impressed by that, preferring to eat in the seedy underworld he inhabits.

So opens Rika Yokomori’s novel set in Japan and New York.

In places the book comes across almost as a reality TV programme. It is as if the camera is set permanently on Saya’s shoulder. She is rarely out of shot as we learn of the exciting parts of her life, and the mundane, almost in equal measure.

But this is a page turner as we watch Saya slowly growing into a worldly-wise woman. Gradually she begins to see things as they really are. Everything, as you might expect, is not so rosy in the life of a wannabe yakuza’s moll. There are sure to be rocky times ahead.

Rika Yokomori has published more than thirty-five books in the past fifteen years and this one is certainly worth a look. True, I did guess the ending some time before actually arriving there, but that was no big disappointment. There is a peach of a final sentence to look forward to. If you enjoy modern novels from Japan then you will find plenty here to keep you interested. If you haven’t tried oriental fiction before, then this one could be a good place to start.

Yokozuna, Haku-Ho, Saved Japanese Sumo

It started from an article of a Japanese magazine. The article reported that Japanese Sumo wrestlers committed a crime of illegal baseball gambling provided by Japanese organized crime group. Some of them are high-rank wrestlers; including Oozeki (2nd Highest Rank), and Stable Masters, who are in a leading position of young wrestlers. There were Sumo wrestlers gamble problem in the past. This time, however, was different since it was involving major Sumo Masters and Wrestlers. The order restoration committee suspended activities of the chairman of Sumo Association and replaced the chairman. Japanese people consider this as the largest disaster of Sumo history.

Nagoya season started on July 11 through July 25 as scheduled. There was even opinion that Nagoya season should not have held. Japanese National Broadcasting did not carry live broadcasting as they usually do. The chairman of Sumo Association appeared to apologize on the first day. Number of sightseers reduced by 10%. About 8000 people cancelled their tickets. Emperor’s office decided not to give the largest award for the champion, Emperor’s Trophy to the champion of the season.

For people who are not familiar with this Sumo wrestling sport, Sumo is Japanese traditional wrestling style. 2 muscular guys fight to push the enemy out of field or cause him to fall on the ground.

Many foreign people love Japanese Sumo I know. For these out of Japan Sumo fans, the situation seemed hopeless. They must have worried about what would happen with the Sumo. It was quite fortunate for entire Sumo community that they had this Yokozuna (Grand Champion, highest-rank wrestler). His name is Haku-Ho. During this confusion of illegal baseball gambling of Sumo Association, Yokozuna, Haku-Ho continued to fight quietly and kept winning. His record for consecutive winning before Nagoya season was – No.4 in the history after No.1 Futaba-Yama, 69, No.2 Chiyo-no-Fuji 52, No.3 Tai-Ho 45. In this Nagoya season, Haku-Ho continued to win and recorded 47 continuous. He became No.3 record holder overcoming his own teacher, Tai-Ho. Haku-Ho was the winner of Nagoya season, but he could not get some rewards centered on Emperor’s Trophy, due to this illegal gamble scandal. He looked a little bit sad despite his own outstanding record of consecutive win and championship. He did not comment on the scandal when an interviewer asked.

Time has passed. Sumo Autumn Season started on September 12. There were still some people who were talking about the scandal. The association decided to fire one Ohzeki (2nd Rank next to Yokozuna, 1st Rank). Some others disappeared forever. The damage from the scandal was obvious. The people’s center of interest, however, had already shifted from the scandal to the consecutive win record by Haku-Ho. People talked about how many wins Haku-Ho can achieve, if he could win Autumn Season without losing. Haku-Ho looked like Blue Wild Wolf, from Mongolian Prairie, who does not bark, who does not growl, but just attack and fight. He was quiet. When a reporter asked about his pressure, he just said that he fights doing his best.

7th day of the season, he won the match and became official No.2 of the historical record. He continued to win and finished the entire season without losing once again. His continuing win after this season was 62, next to No.1 record of 69. Seniors and former Sumo wrestlers are saying that they cannot imagine anyone who can win Haku-Ho.

People do not talk about the news of Illegal Gambling by Sumo wrestlers any more. People say just about how many more Haku-Ho can win. They talk about if he could replace historical record of 69 wins. If there were no Haku-Ho, if there were no his continuing winning record, the popularity of Sumo would not have recovered this quick. It must not be just me who believe that this Mongolia born young Yokozuna saved Japanese Sumo.

How to Solve and Prevent Pachislo Slot Machine Coin Jams

Pachislo Coin Jam Prevention & Solutions

Square Plastic Brown or Black Coin Mechanism

1. Turn machine off.

2. Remove the bottom coin shield. In some cases the square brown coin mechanisms have coin shields that are hinged – just lower the coin shield. The black versions have removable coin shields. Press in on the left and right to remove.

3. The coin path is covered by a spring loaded area. Look closely and you can easily see the spring in the photo. Pull the spring loaded area up – it actually moves up and to the upper right.

4. Clear the coin with your finger.

If the coin is stuck in the acceptor on the front of the machine and you can see it, try pulling out of the front. If it is lodged where you either cannot see it or cannot remove it, pull open the spring loaded area and put in another token and push it UP to push dislodge the coin and pull it up through the front. Turn the machine back on and reset if needed.

The longer metal versions work the same way and will also have a spring loaded front.

Preventing Coin Jams

Most coin jams are not the result of problems with your machine but of tokens and dirt.

Almost all Pachislos accept .984″ tokens only. Although your tokens may appear to be the same size, a slight variation in length or width may be enough to cause coin jams.

Coin mechanisms can become VERY dirty over time. This caused the tokens to move very slowly through the coin path and become stuck in the coin mechanism or the coin chute and never fall into the hopper. Follow these steps to prevent future coin jams:

1. Check for Magnetic Tokens

Before you use tokens in your machine run a magnet over them and remove any magnetic tokens. Quite a few machines will kick out or jam magnetic tokens and THEN send an error code.

2. Check Token Sizes

Most Pashiclos only accept .984″ tokens. All of your tokens may appear to be identical is size, but your machine may be selective. Anything other than.984″ will become jammed. Put the tokens in small stacks and see if any are slightly larger or thicker than the others and remove them.

3. Clean the Tokens

Use Kaboom cleaner. Mix a little in a bucket of warm water. Drop your tokens in and mix them for a few minutes. Rinse them and dry them before using. If you use your machine often do this every six months or so to prevent dirt buildup in the coin mechanism, coin path and hopper.

4. Clean the Mechanism

Removing the mechanism is simple. Unplug and remove it and clean it well with a wet wipe, lifting the spring loaded area and cleaning there as well. If the metal coin path is rusting use a sharp knife, screwdriver or exacto knife to remove as much rust as possible and clean the rust with a wipe. When you are done give the path a VERY SMALL squirt of silicone spray, wiping off any excess.

5. Clean the Coin Chute and the Coin Acceptor

While the coin mechanism is out, clean the outside coin acceptor where the coins enter the machine. If you have wet wipes try using a thin knife to push a wet wipe gently into the coin acceptor from the outside of the machine and pulling it out the other side to clean the inside. When you are satisfied spray one squirt of silicone spray into the coin acceptor, wiping off any excess silicone.

Clean the coin chute as well (this what brings the tokens from the coin mechanism to the hopper) and whatever you can reach in the hopper.
